I purchase my paper targets (and cardboard targets, too) online in bulk. Purchasing 25 to 100 targets will save you a lot over buying them at the range, plus you get exactly the targets you want…instead of whatever the range happens to have on hand.  I’m sure the local ranges hate me for this, since their mark-up on paper targets is typically 5x.  But what they lose in target sales I hope they make-up for by me visiting more often that the typical customer.

While I’m not endorsing any of these stores specifically, I tend to purchase my targets from Law Enforcement Targets, Inc. or Target Barn.

At last it is here and it is real. A Glock Beavertail!

This is the real deal from Glock. I hear it is shipping with new Gen 4 guns. I am not sure which ones. The one pictured is a 17. I hope I can get one for the 26 and someday the 19.

I never ran either of the back straps on my Glock, but to get the beavertail you must. The medium or large. So far I can feel how the magazine release is a bit farther to reach with my thumb. Time will tell if it is a trade off I am willing to live with.

I don’t feel like I had a perfect grip on the gun so maybe now with the beavertail I can fix that.

First, tell us a bit about your shooting background.

My father bought me a 410 shotgun when I was 5 yrs old. Yes, it’s true. Come on, I have family in LA and TX, it’s normal for a 5 yr old girl to have her own shotgun and to know how to use and clean her father’s rifles. I was a great shot, but a determined vegetarian in Cajun country. Since my father refused to buy ammo for me because I wouldn’t kill anything, I stopped shooting for a while.

I picked up a borrowed rifle in 2011 and won high M1 Carbine at a John C. Garand Rifle Match. I shot a couple of cross country service rifle matches, including the Confederate National Championships, before I found pistols and IDPA in summer 2011. In Jan 2012 I shot my first USPSA match. Since I shoot both IDPA and USPSA, I attempted to use gear without boundaries. (Though it took me a while to shake cover calls and dropping mags in IDPA I was only running a G34 until Dec 2012 when I started reloading. Since then, my 1911 .45 ACP has been my primary competition gun. I’m also the lead female firearms instructor at Sandy Springs Gun Club where I teach group Basic Pistol as well as private classes.

I haven’t won anything major – yet Since Jan 2012 I’ve gone from a D to a 53% C class shooter – usually 65ish at monthly matches. When assessing myself, I concentrate on what I did well. If most of my stages are 8th, 9th, 8th, 9th but one was 6th – I tell myself that I’m capable of 6th across the board. At one Cherokee Gun Club match, on one stage, I was 3 of 20 Production shooters and 13 of 70 overall, 1 of only 10 people overall that shot it clean. That’s what I’m going to do across the board very soon, except I’ll be looking for a 1st or 2nd on a stage as well

Q. You attended SHOT 2013. Was this your first visit, what is your history with the show?

This was my first visit to SHOT. It was overwhelming, amazing, Disneyland on steroids Gun Show. I’ve wanted to go since I started shooting and still can’t believe that I had the opportunity this year.

What were your expectations of the show?

I was hoping to see and play with (as much as was safe) the toys. I was also hoping to really get a handle on exactly what products are available. That is to say that if I want a scope or new grips, my knowledge is limited to the information that I can gain from friends, literature, and the internet. At SHOT I was hoping to get a full 360 view on what products are out there. I was also hoping to meet people, make friends, and learn from them.

Q. Did the SHOW live up to your expectations?

YES, YES, YES!!!

What did you see: Best new item, Best item you didn’t expect to see, Worse item

It’s tough to comment on the above categories since I didn’t even come close to seeing everything. There’s also so many categories: Hunting, Survival, Multiple Different Sports, LE, Military, etc.

Item you expected to see but didn’t

The only things I didn’t see were because I didn’t have time to see everything that was there. It’s very difficult to explain just how many vendors were there. Picture 6 football fields with over 90% of the booths being 10′ X 8′. I’m a good navigator and I got lost on the way to/from the ladies rooms many times. I planned and didn’t waste any time, but only saw about 30% of SHOT and I was there for 3 full days.

I met and got an impromptu lesson from Chip McCormick. Wow!

Q. How was the mood of the show, in light of the current legislative talk about bans and restrictions on guns and gun related products?

The mood was fantastic. I didn’t notice anyone being negative. There were no protesters outside and those of us attending SHOT carried on, business as usual. The only indication that I noticed was that virtually everything was selling out like wildfire. Components vendors had virtually no product available (go figure).

Q. SHOT 2014, are you already getting ready for next year?

Oh, yes. I’ve already begun to formulate my strategy for next year when I hope to be able to see much more of the show

On March 13, the same day most of the provisions of the SAFE Act went into effect, NYS suffered its first mass shooting under the new law. Kurt Meyers, 64, of Mohawk, N.Y., set fire to his apartment and then began a shooting rampage.

Taking his shotgun and driving to John’s Barber Shop, Meyers killed two men and critically wounded another two. He the proceeded to Gaffey’s Fast Lube killing two more men including NYS Correctional Officer Michael Renshaw. Barricading himself inside an abandoned bar, Meyers opened fire on police and the FBI at 1:30 p.m. The standoff continued for almost 19 hours before State and FBI tactical teams forced entry. Meyers was killed by the officers in a shootout, but not before taking the life of the brave little FBI K-9 who led the way.

Meyers, described as a loner who kept to himself by neighbors, committed his heinous acts with a shotgun legal under the provisions of the SAFE Act. This act has made the case for many New Yorkers that the SAFE Act will do nothing to prevent mass shootings by the deranged. Coupled with the governors suggested mental health program cuts, the question rings ever louder; does the SAFE Act make anyone safe?

The New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013 commonly known as the NY SAFE Act is a gun control law in the state of New York. It is a Failure and does not keep anyone SAFE!

You can’t BAN stupid. It is that simple. Take responsibility for your own actions. Get government out of peoples lives.
